challenging and exciting field of Computer Science. There are great professional
opportunities in our discipline. Many fast growing jobs for the next decade require
a Computer Science degree.

the Computer Science major program at William Paterson and find out why William
Paterson is an excellent choice for you. Listed below are the highlights of the
Computer Science major program at William Paterson University.
Accredited program: The Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science is
accredited by the national Computing Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation
Board for Engineering and Technology
(ABET).
Up-to-date curriculum: The major program is based on IEEE/ACM undergraduate
curriculum guidelines. In addition to a set of rigorous foundation courses, the
program offers a wide range of electives such as Data Communications and Computer
Networks, Database Systems, Computer Graphics, Artificial Intelligence, Computer
Architecture, etc. The program is well balanced between theory and applications
that paves the way for you to pursue either a professional career or graduate studies.
Small classes: All computer classes are limited to 20 students, and the size
of most junior and senior level computer classes averages at less than 15. Small
classes guarantee close interaction between students and professors, which we believe
is crucial to your success. Full-time faculty teaches all major courses.
Dedicated and experienced faculty: All Computer Science faculty members have
Ph.D. degrees with an average of more than ten years teaching experience. Once a
student is admitted to the program, a faculty member is assigned as the advisor.
Often, this relationship lasts beyond graduation. Outside the classroom, departmental
student mentors provide unlimited academic assistance for most hours of the day and
by other Academic Support Centers.
Special project and research opportunities: Qualified upper level students are
encouraged to do projects on topics of interest or to work with professors on
research projects. In both cases, the faculty members provide proper guidance.
Many students have published papers with their professors and presented their
results at international conferences.
Student organizations: There is an active student chapter of ACM
(Association for Computing Machinery), and a Computer Society of the Student
Government Association. We also have a local chapter of a National Computer Science
Honor society: the Gamma Chapter of the Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE). Since its inception
in May 1988, there have been 122 student inductees of the UPE.
Computing equipment: There are several computer labs on campus and three of
them are exclusively reserved for computer science major students. All of these labs
are equipped with the latest PC's running Windows XP and SUN Solaris UNIX workstations.
The entire campus is fully networked (wired and wireless) and students can easily
access the Internet, E-mail, and other services. A wide range of applications software
and programming languages are available on these systems.
Internship opportunities: Students are encouraged to acquire work experience
in related fields. There are many job opportunities available both on and off campus.
For example, many Computer Science majors are working on a part time basis in the
computer labs or for the Instruction and Research Technology office on campus in a
variety of projects. Other students work with outside companies. In many instances,
internships evolve into full time employment upon graduation.
Successful placement record: Alumni hold rewarding jobs as programmers,
system analysts, database designers and administrators, managers, software engineers,
and network specialists with companies such as AT&T, Telcordia Technologies,
Alcatel-Lucent, IBM, Johnson & Johnson, and Verizon. Recently, most graduates have
received job offers before or shortly after graduation. Several students have chosen
to pursue graduate studies every year.
