Many Computer Science faculty conduct research with
students, some with pay through grants or college/ departmental
funding, some on a voluntary basis or beginning in course work. Such opportunities
offer students a chance to study the intricate details of the cutting
edge of Computer Science.
Given the enrichment of a strong faculty-student interaction and cooperation,
students who demonstrate academic excellence can partake in these great
ventures. The experience, knowledge and prestige gained lasts a lifetime.
Whether on a résumé or graduate school application,
this is a sign of
distinction.
To match your interests to those of faculty, consult the
faculty home pages.
Many research opportunities are available in the Computer Science
Department. See if you would like to join one of the
research groups in our department. Students can also initiate their
own research with a faculty member.
Internship:
Students are encouraged to acquire work experience in related fields.
There are many job opportunities available both on and off campus. In
addition to gaining real world work experience, they earn credits for
their internship. Frequently, internships evolve into full-time
employment upon graduation.
Internship information
and sources:
- Upper level Computer Science students who perform
academically relevant Internships can get Computer Science course credit
through CS 495.
In this course students complete a project for a company and are
evaluated by the project supervisor in that company on how well
prepared he/she was for the project and how well he/she has
succeeded. The project advisor who is a member of the faculty will
then assign a grade to the student based on the project supervisor's
evaluation report and the written report produced by the student.
Starting in fall 2006, students are required to make an oral
presentation to the members of the Department Curriculum Committee
(and usually to the general student population in the form of a
seminar)
who also provide to the project advisor their assessment of the
project for grading consideration.

Numerous local industries and businesses hire Computer
Science majors well before graduation. Some of our students have formed
consulting firms. As the nature of these positions grow and change
rapidly,
listing them in static web pages would soon become dated; hence,
for further
details, consult CS bulletin boards (keep current), CS faculty, and a
great resource of job preparatory skills and information, the
Career
Development Center of WPU. Register your résumé
with them. Get experience
before you graduate, whether by these methods or Internship.
